FAQ
What should I know about recording my audio files?
- Record your audio files at 24-bit or higher for best quality. The session sample rates must be 44.1 KHz or 96 KHz. This increased dynamic range helps against the structural issues you can experience while recording. In addition, you can achieve lower noise floors and high resolution.
What decibel setting should I use for my recordings?
- Keep your recordings around -3 dBFS. We don’t recommend using more than -6 dBFS.
Why do I need to label my tracks?
- Labeling helps the mix engineer know which sections have been included and allows a check and balance system if any files are missing. Properly label your tracks by name (Examples: Lead Vocals, Adlibs, Background Vocals, Chorus, Bridge, Drums). If not done, it will slow down the time it will take to finish your master recording.
What kind of improvements can be expected from mixing?
- Mixing can achieve the corrective balance, volume, and depth for a style of music. It can add clarity and punch to music, giving it more vitality. It can also allow for automation needed to give the overall feel of the recording more cohension.
Should I send a reference track?
- Please send us a reference track to show us the sound you like. If there are no reference tracks – no worries; we will pick up something similar to your song.
What are some tips to help ensure the best possible mix?
- Audio quality can be very subjective. Before hiring a mastering engineer for a project, you should have a clear objective on how you would like the finished project to sound. Communication of these objectives between client and engineer is a key component to the success of a project. The language used to describe the character of audio can be ambiguous. Terms like “brassy,” “fat” and “present” mean different things to different people.
How do I prepare my files for mixing?
- Prep your files for mixing by making sure all faders are at unity or 0db, panning is down the center, effects are bypassed, vocals are in mono, and beats/2track instrumentals are in stereo. Export all files in the same region from the same starting point of the session 0:00. When we import them, it is critical to ensure they are fully synced and lined up properly.
